What is the History behind Storring Septic's Business?

Grant Storring and Greg Storring began installing septic systems in the early 1970’s. Vera Storring, Grant’s wife looked after the invoicing and financial area of the business. During that time, Grant recognized the need for a pumping service.

He, along with his son Greg, began the process of acquiring a Certificate of Approval from the Ministry of Environment. It took two years to receive the approval. 

In August of 1974 approval was issued for Number 1 & 2 lagoons. A bulldozer was hired to dig the two clay based cells 100’ x 100’ x 8’ which would each hold approximately 450,000 gallons. 

While waiting for our lagoons to be constructed, having a Certificate of Approval for field spreading, we were able do a “Signature of Service” allowing the development of Holding Tanks on Neville’s Point in Erinsville. Before building could begin, the cottage owners required a signature saying they had someone to service and dispose of their septage. At that time it was legislated that all Holding Tanks were to be serviced at least once a year. Later it had been legislated that septic tanks on Neville’s Point were to be serviced every three years because of the close proximity to Beaver Lake; at that time the testing was done by Ministery Of Environment and Storring.

In 1990, the need for septic pumping grew to the point that Storring Septic Service applied for an additional two lagoons. Consulting Engineers did a Hydrogeological Survey for the proposed expansion. In September of 1990, an on-site test well and an overburden piezometer was installed. In November of 1990 approval to construct two lagoons 75 x 150 x 8 would hold approximately one million gallons each. With the extra development the bacterial treatment is enhanced and makes a much cleaner waste stream by letting the bacteria do the breakdown naturally, then the bio-solids are land applied. Soil samples have been taken repeatedly showing no detrimental effect from long-term application of the bio-solids. Chalmers Environmental Consulting was hired to oversee the construction.

The 3rd lagoon was constructed in 1990. Grant Storring passed away in 1993 before the start of the 4th lagoon. His son, Greg continued with the construction plan. Chalmers collected soil samples from our existing fields and sent it to a soil consultant. Geo Cor Engineering staff identified that the clay-silt material on our farm was acceptable for the lagoon liner. The clay was excavated and imported to the lagoon. It was used for the floor and berms. The entire floor was compacted by repeated passing a loaded tandem dump truck. The berms were compacted by tracked equipment. Geo Cor conducted a patch test and verified liner compaction.
Chalmers Environmental Consulting prepared and submitted the first annual report in February 1995. The data required was quantity of waste, amounts removed and analytical data from the testing of the monitoring wells and piezometers.

Greg Storring decided it made good business sense to purchase the adjoining farm property. This would add another 70 acres to the already 100 acres owned, there by keeping a greater distance between the lagoons and existing neighbors. This also gave the opportunity for extra spreading fields. Certificate of Approval for the extra fields was applied for and given. Chalmers Environmental Consulting continued with the annual reports for several years. After which Greg handled the reports for a period of time.

In September 2004, Storring Septic Service incorporated. Greg and Cheryl Storring became the directors of Storring Septic Service Limited. Ministry Of Environment requested an upgraded monitoring groundwater program. In 2004, Geo Cor Engineering installed three new piezometers around the perimeter of the lagoons. One upgrade and two downgrade from the lagoons. Water quality is done every 6 months and submitted to Ministry Of Environment. GeoCor Engineering have been submitting these reports and apply for our Certificate of Approval’s to-date.

In 2007, we purchased a second truck to help with the growing demand. For the last 5 years, Ian Storring has been employed full time. Currently, we have two trucks on the road.

As time passes and the communities grow, the concern for capacity in our municipal and city sewage infrastructure grows as well. Our need to be proactive for the future is now.
